In October of 2004, the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (Check21) opened the doors for financial institutions to accept an image of a check for deposit instead of the actual paper item. The advent of the smartphone in 2007 paved the way for consumers to make deposits by simply snapping a picture of a check and submitting the image through their financial institution’s mobile banking application. Virtually every bank and credit union in the U.S. now offer mobile check deposit for their accountholders.
We provide safe and secure processing for mobile deposits. Typically, mobile banking applications let users capture check images, then those applications transmit the image to a mobile remote deposit platform for processing. Mobile remote deposit platforms receive the check image, verify the account number and amount, confirm the endorsement, evaluate the risk associated with the item, process the deposit, and help post it to the financial institution’s core system.
We offer two great mobile deposit platforms: JHA SmartPay Remote Deposit Anywhere™ (RDA) and Ensenta Consumer Mobile™. These solutions work with more than 40 mobile banking providers to provide mobile remote deposit services to financial institution accountholders. Each solution has more than 1,600 active financial institutions, and each serves banks as well as credit unions.
SmartPay RDA is part of the SmartPay suite, which includes SmartPay Business, a solution for businesses that includes desktop and mobile remote deposit, ACH origination, acceptance of debit and credit cards, and online payments. RDA includes SmartMonitor, an easy-to-use risk management system that offers optional integration to Early Warning Services®. It also offers item correction services where our team reviews and adjusts errors and unread items to free up your staff for other tasks. RDA is a great fit for financial institutions focused on operational efficiency, or those who want their consumer and commercial payments products to be consolidated in a single platform.
Ensenta Consumer Mobile is part of the Ensenta suite of products, which also includes an ATM deposit module as well as desktop and mobile remote deposit for businesses. Ensenta Consumer Mobile boasts an industry-leading risk management module that presents items for financial institution review based on more than 200 independent risk factors. Ensenta also integrates with Early Warning, but it also boasts integration to other risk mitigation tools, such as Verafin. Ensenta is the frequent product choice for some of our largest financial institutions.

These topics may prove helpful if you are considering integration with RDA:
User Management - Use the SmartPay Consumer Mobile Admin API (RDA Admin) to add or modify users and accounts. It will also allow you to modify a variety of user-level risk settings. You can even create and/or edit Risk Profiles, which are templates that govern how deposits from associated users are analyzed.
Submitting Deposits - Use the SmartPay Consumer Mobile API (RDA) to perform all activities related to mobile deposits. For instance, this API can return data to be displayed to the user prior to the deposit, including the user’s count and amount limits, the financial institution’s terms and conditions, or even the user’s past deposit history and/or images of past deposited items. This same API is used to make both single item and multi-check deposits.
Reporting - The SmartPay Transaction Reporting API allows you to pull back current day or historical reports as often as you like. These reports can contain summary and/or detailed information related to transactions that meet the criteria you present.
Notifications - SmartPay offers SmartWatch, a web hook API that provides push notifications whenever the status of a previously submitted transaction changes. While integrators can verify status through traditional reporting requests, it is a time-consuming process that does not keep your solution and the SmartPay platform in sync. By opting to use SmartWatch, you can update your transaction history each time it sends an alert, ensuring you application and ours maintain consistent data.
Multi-Check Deposits - RDA accepts both single item deposits and multi-check deposits through the same API, allowing multiple check images to be submitted as part of a single deposit. It may require less development and QA effort to support only single item deposits, but depositors strongly prefer the superior experience associated with being able to deposit several checks in one streamlined process.
These topics may prove helpful if you are considering integration with Ensenta Consumer Mobile:
User Management - The Ensenta mobile deposit solution shifts the burden of user enrollment and boarding to the mobile banking provider. While Ensenta can store limited user information in its own database, most implementations rely on the mobile banking provider to only submit deposit requests from users who are allowed to make mobile deposits. This requires the mobile banking solution to police users and maintain a structure for identifying which users can access mobile deposit functionality, but it eliminates the potentially cumbersome process of user boarding (and maintenance) on the Ensenta side.
Submitting Deposits - Ensenta’s API uses an interactive approach for submitting deposits. Rather than a simple submit-and-response structure, the mobile banking provider engages in more of a conversation. For example, if the mobile banking provider submits a deposit request without a proper endorsement, the Ensenta API has the capability (for integrators who leverage it) of returning information to the mobile banking application, allowing it to engage the depositor to address the issue, then updating the deposit request. While this may require more sophisticated development and QA effort from integrators, it provides an enhanced experience for depositors.
Reporting - The Ensenta Mobile APIs allows you to pull back current day or historical reports as often as you like. These reports can contain summary and/or detailed information related to transactions that meet the criteria you present.
Notifications - Ensenta offers Smart Alerts, a web hook API that provides push notifications whenever the status of a previously submitted transaction changes. While integrators can verify status through traditional reporting requests, it is a time-consuming process that does not keep your solution and the Ensenta platform in constant sync. By opting to use Smart Alerts, you can update your transaction history each time it sends an alert, ensuring you application and ours maintain consistent data.
Multi-Check Deposits - Ensenta supports both single and multi-check deposits, but integrators who wish to use multi-check functionality must leverage the Ensenta Mobile API Multi-Check API. Integrators may submit single item deposits through the multi-check API, but the Ensenta Mobile API Single Check API does not allow multi-check deposits.
Submitting mobile deposits relies on components that do a variety of tasks, including capturing check images, mitigating fraud, and analyzing deposit activity. Our platforms offer additional tools and resources to streamline your integration efforts and enhance your solutions.
Mitek MiSnap™
If your applications will be responsible for capturing check images using the camera on the depositor’s mobile device, you should consider using the Mitek MiSnap Software Development Kit (SDK). The MiSnap SDK leverages Mitek’s long history of image capture and analysis to create a strong foundation for mobile deposit applications. Since most mobile remote deposit platforms use Mitek® as their engine for processing remote deposits, the MiSnap SDK aligns the capture and processing environments by leveraging components from the same company for the two critical parts of the overall process.
Data Analytics - Monitoring the macro view of your mobile deposit program is easier with SmartSight, our data analysis and business intelligence (BI)application. SmartSight provides summarized historical data for SmartPay RDA and other platforms we provide. RDA information is available in SmartPay Manager through an easy-to-use graphical user interface with intuitive drill-down capability. You can leverage this data to create your own front end analysis tool or simply make it available for clients to leverage via the BI application of their choosing, such as Microsoft Power BI.
